Queenston Pottery
Queenston Pottery is a thriving, multigenerational family enterprise and a true hidden gem of the Niagara region. Now in our third year with the NOTL Studio Tour, we invite visitors to discover the evolution of our boutique studio, from its 1978 roots into a premier destination for fine ceramic art.
Today, the studio is led by Rick and his wife Lisa, alongside a dedicated production team, while founder Eva continues to focus her mastery on the studio's intricate glazing and signature brushwork. Queenston Pottery is a vibrant, active workspace and "living studio", frequently welcoming visitors to step inside to meet the artists and see the team in action during production days.
Every piece at Queenston Pottery is a marriage of art and science, crafted with the meticulous attention to detail that defines a boutique studio.
We work primarily with white stoneware clay, which undergoes a precise journey:
Form & First Firing: Each item is handcrafted and undergoes an initial firing to 1000°C to prepare the "canvas."
Glaze Chemistry: We utilize a library of over 25 custom formulations. These are applied through layering, dipping, spraying, and detailed brushwork to ensure that no two pieces are ever identical.
The Reduction Kiln: The final transformation occurs at 1320°C in our hand-built reduction kiln. This high-temperature environment vitrifies the clay and glazes, creating the deep textures, unique colours, and exceptional durability that define our signature look. From the first mix of clay to the final display, every piece is handled dozens of times to ensure it meets our exacting standards for both beauty and function.
